Even when we all put ourselves under one rainbow, we are still as diverse group of individual people as the rainbow is. As individuals, we have different needs and different wants, but as a whole, we are still sexual and gender minority when compared to our straight counterparts.

D is for Diversity
Younger, I didn’t see it exactly as that. I saw pride as a way to further awareness of, mainly, gay rights. I wanted a moment when I would feel fully accepted and applauded. I loved the feeling of being whole.
The understanding that pride wasn’t just about gay rights came later. I think the realisation hit when I was organising Helsinki Pride in Finland one year. The pride we were organising was about us as a whole, and if we segregated ourselves from the rest of the “alphabet mafia”, the fight for the better future would be lost.

And as years have wound on, even the traditional rainbow flag has undergone changes to embrace the diversity. For me, that speaks of understanding and inclusion, which is something that is sorely needed in the modern world.
