Let’s go back the memory lane to the mid 1980s. Yes, I am that old. And just the other day I was reminiscing about how much the computer tech has gone forward since those days.

As you can see from the picture, my first ever was Commodore C64 with a cassette deck. And that was where the little screwdriver came into play. If your games, on C-cassettes, didn’t work, you’d have to reload them and adjust the little screw in the deck itself, for better contact I guess. Usually that helped and you wouldn’t get the syntax error text.

Funniest thing?

I still remember the following:

10 ? “Hello World!”

20 GOTO 10

And that masterful coding would print the text Hello World! on the screen, and the second line would make it repeat the text… forever!

I also dabbled with coding as we had a magazine in Finland, called MikroBitti, rhat included small programs that you could then rigorously copy from the magazine to your computer screen. One day I decided to do just that, spent an hour reading the page, and painstakingly tapping the keyboard… and it didn’t work. That was the end of my budding coding career.

I kinda miss those days, but on the other hand… not. Since those days we moved on to Commodore Amiga 500, and after that a proper PC, with a modem! Those are stories for other times. Ah, the nostalgia.

Today’s blog was a short one, as it has been such a long time since my first ever computer that the memories have started to fade.
